SENIOR CIVIL ENGINEERS

The Tanzania–Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is a statutory institution jointly owned by the Governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Zambia on a 50:50 shareholding basis. The Authority has its Head Office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and operates through two Regional Administrative Centres located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Mpika, Zambia.

TAZARA invites applications from suitably qualified, experienced, and competent nationals of Tanzania and Zambia to fill the following vacant positions:

POSITION DETAILS

• Position Title: Senior Civil Engineer (SCE)

• Number of Posts: Four (4)

• Salary Scale: TSG 12

• Reporting To: Regional Civil Engineer

• Duty Stations: Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) / Mpika (Zambia)

JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating maintenance and rehabilitation activities of railway infrastructure, including permanent way, bridges, tunnels, utility buildings, feeder roads, water supply systems, and staff housing, to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient railway operations in line with TAZARA’s objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Civil Engineer shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

1. Implementing instructions from the Regional Civil Engineer regarding maintenance and repair works of permanent way and related infrastructure.

2. Preparing regional maintenance and rehabilitation plans for permanent way, bridges, tunnels, sidings, and related structures based on district submissions.

3. Providing technical guidance and supervision to subordinate staff and contractors to ensure compliance with approved standards, specifications, and quality requirements.

4. Monitoring the execution of approved maintenance and emergency repair plans to ensure activities are completed within approved budgets and schedules.

5. Conducting joint periodic inspections with district teams to assess infrastructure conditions and confirm achievement of maintenance standards.

6. Preparing periodic technical reports on the condition of railway infrastructure to support management decision-making and mobilization of corrective measures.

7. Participating in investigations of railway service accidents and coordinating the provision of materials, tools, and equipment for emergency response and restoration of operations.

8. Preparing Bills of Quantities (BoQs), work schedules, and budget estimates to support infrastructure maintenance planning and prioritization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Form IV or Form VI Certificate of Tanzania or Grade 12 Certificate of Zambia.

2. Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university.

3. A minimum of five (5) years of relevant working experience, preferably in railway operations or large infrastructure projects.

4. Age between thirty-two (32) and fifty (50) years.

5. Registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of Tanzania or Zambia.

6. Possession of additional relevant qualifications will be an added advantage.

CORE COMPETENCIES

Applicants should demonstrate the following competencies:

1. Strong technical knowledge of railway or heavy infrastructure maintenance.

2. Proven ability to supervise teams and manage projects effectively.

3. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

4. Strong communication and technical report-writing skills.

5. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
